McKesson’s EHR is a mature product that’s been on the market for more than 20 years. McKesson purchased Physicians Micro Systems (PMS) around 2007. With this purchase McKesson acquired Practice Partner EHR, PMS’s premier electronic health records software program. The product’s name remains Practice Partner EHR. However, McKesson integrated Practice Partner with its own product, Medisoft, to create Medisoft Clinical. This program combines the powerful patient accounting capabilities of Medisoft with Practice Partner’s fully configurable electronic health records system.

Thus Medisoft Clinical was born. It has the best of everything is one package. Please
note that when we talk about “Medisoft Clinical” we’re talking about the combined
functionality of Medisoft PMS and Practice Partner EHR. However, sometimes you’ll
see it advertised under both names. This can create confusion as to which product
is best for your needs. Interestingly, Medisoft Clinical is much less expensive
than Total Practice Partner while incorporating superior technology. In fact, it’s
unbelievably low-
Here at Maritec, we have been installing electronic medical records for years. We were satisfied with the EHR product we distributed. It was stable and fairly easy to understand. When McKesson purchased Practice Partner and asked dealers to evaluate it, we did. After our initial evaluation, we found a product that can be used in a basic EHR environment and can also expand as far as an office wants to go. Unlike most EHRs on the market, this program has the look and feel of a real chart, to which an office staff can relate. Most doctors did not sign on to be IT professionals in additional to healthcare professionals. They do need to keep accurate and efficient records, but their primary goal is the wellbeing of the patient and sustaining a profitable business. Medisoft Clinical offers doctors great flexibility in how they develop and maintain their patient records, including a variety of input methods, ranging from “simple point and click” to use of a stylus and smart pad to voice recognition.

This is technology built into the software and designed to move information around the chart from a single entry point. Patient chart information is also posted to a Chart Summary Screen, making reviewing
a chart quick and easy and much faster than trying to put together the information
from a paper chart. Once into a progress note, you need never leave the screen.

In the end only the strong will survive. Small companies will either be bought out by big companies or will not be able to fund the stringent government requirements and go out of business as a result. McKesson will be one of the survivors. Medisoft Clinical/Practice Partner will bring order and efficiency to EHR implementation and, as it is CCHIT certified, will also make you eligible for the government incentive rewards as presented in the HITECH Act of 2009.
Remember, implementing an EHR is a process. You won’t see full implementation overnight, in a week or even in a month after you install your system. It takes knowledgeable support and a willingness to make the move. It takes a commitment from all staff members and a willingness to change old habits. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. If you plan on being in practice for more than 5 years, you will be using an EHR. Count on it. The sooner you start, the sooner you will be fully compliant. Meaningful use rewards begin in 2011. Start now and avoid the rush.
